He wanted to catch the reader’s attention by explaining the challenges that slaves had to face and how they were forced to leave their families. Haley wrote this book to express to people that honoring the men and women who fought for our freedom is very important. Men and women both had to go through things in the past so we can have our freedom today. It affected them mentally and physically as they got older. Children were forced to watch their parents being beaten. African American women had to go through being beaten, raped and their children being taken away at birth. Men were being recognized more than women. It also tells about the things women and children had to do to gain respect and freedom. Haley compares the challenges his ancestors faced to Kunta Kinte’s challenges. ![]() The challenges faced were of gaining power and freedom. He turns bad situations into a beautiful thing by including the love that everyone in the book had for their families. In Alex Haley’s novel Roots, he expresses the struggles and challenges of African American men and women. ![]()
